Obon is a Japanese custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist-Confucian custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves.
For us at ZBTC, the celebration of Obon is expressing gratitude for our ancestors. We use this time to both pay respects and truly be grateful with our whole being for Buddha’s teachings.
Gratefulness for Zazen, the Temple, the cushion, for all the ancestors that brought us to this moment to this wondrous practice.
Being truly grateful is forgetting yourself and opening to the true reality that we are not separate. Not separate from each other, from the universe, no matter how deluded we are.
After the Special Service we will share a potluck meal either at the Temple (at 608 Dempster in Evanston) or, weather permitting, at the lake.
Please sign up for potluck at your earliest convenience.
