The Sixteen Buddhist Precepts
The Three Treasures:
- Namu Kie Butsu: I take refuge in the Buddha.
- Namu Kie Ho: I take refuge in the Dharma.
- Namu Kie So: I take refuge in the Sangha.
The Three Pure Precepts:
- In all circumstances embrace and sustain right conduct.
- In all circumstances embrace and sustain good deeds based on the Dharma.
- Perform all acts for the benefit of all beings in loving kindness.
The Ten Prohibitive Precepts:
- Do not take life unnecessarily.
- Do not steal others' property.
- Do not misuse sexuality.
- Do not tell lies.
- Do not use intoxicating drinks excessively, nor use narcotics.
- Avoid speaking of other people's faults or shortcomings.
- Do not praise yourself and blame others.
- Do not begrudge giving charity, material or spiritual.
- Do not harbor anger or ill will.
- Do not speak ill of or abuse the Three Treasures.
